The xx w/ jj & Nosaj Thing | Varsity | 4/9

Nosaj Thing opened up the night breaking up beats. He worked his mixers and equipment non-stop. Awesome stuff coming from him.

As fucked up as jj was, she put on a great performance. It was mostly a laptop being played and her singing to it, but it worked.

The xx played their minimal riffing, and everyone loved it. The electronic beats are a nice touch for their sound.

Miike Snow w/ Delorean | Varsity | 4/6

Delorean gave a feel-good performance at the Varsity. They mixed a reverb guitar sound with samples and dance beats. They’ve got that psychedelectronic vibe that you could either chill or dance to, and at times I think I did both.

Miike Snow gave a good enough performance, but the combination of lights, frat boys, and techno freaks made it feel like a rave show that somehow Coldplay was headlining. I like what they do musically, but I didn’t find their live set anything worthy of putting up on a pedestal. I think I liked their show at Lollapalooza last summer better, and I usually never prefer outdoor shows to venues. It’s Britney _____.
