Claps EP Release Party | Kitty Cat Klub | 1/23

January 25, 2010 Leave a comment

Kitty Cat Klub held the EP release party for rising minimal synth trio, Claps. Their new EP is called “New Science,” and it was released on local record label, Guilt Ridden Pop.

Opening for Claps were Mercurial Rage and fellow label mates, Gospel Gossip.

As I mentioned before, Claps is a three piece synth pop band. Patrick Donohoe sings and Sara Abdelaal and Jed Smentek play on vintage synthesizers. When I found out they draw from influences such as Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark, New Order, and Suicide I knew I needed to check them out.

Jed drops the beats on a drum machine, and they all go to work. Sara and Jed complement each other playing bass and lead synth hooks while Patrick struts around in a frenzy reminding me of a convulsing Ian Curtis. This music is feel good and very contagious, and it will make you want to dance for days.

Check out when you can see Claps next, and listen to their music at Claps’ Myspace.

Buy their new EP at Electric Fetus or Treehouse record stores. You can download it off the internet soon. The EP features their hit song, “Fold,” and remixes from Sovietpanda (Too Much Love DJ), Busy Signals, and Chic Portier.

Bowerbirds | Varsity Theater | 1/19

January 20, 2010 2 comments

Sharon Van Etten opened the night, but I missed her performance.

Everyone was sitting down when I walked up to the stage at Varsity. I don’t know if they all dropped acid together or what, but I haven’t seen that happen ever. Then Bowerbirds came out. Everyone remained seated so it confirmed that they had been drugged (maybe in a trance from Sharon’s performance).

After a song from Bowerbirds, I too felt drugged (in a good way). They sounded sincere and honest as they passed each melody through the air.

The show took a tragic turn when the lead singer grabbed a child out of the audience and threw him back at other audience members yelling, “Akon aint got nothin on me!!” I think he was referring to that viral vid from years back. See for yourself.

First he grabs the victim…

Then he throws him back.

This was his nephew, and there was a real tender moment when the kid walked up and gave him some pictures he painted. Awwwww.

One might say these cats gave a bower-ful performance…but then that just makes me confused and think about Kiefer Sutherland.

If you don’t already own their album, Upper Air, I suggest you go here and get it.
