The White Stripes | Under Great White Northern Lights

If you’ve got to release a live record do it in style, right? That’s what The White Stripes did for Under Great White Northern Lights. At least the packaging is pretty neat. No, no. The album and movie are great too.

Go order it at The White Stripes’ site here.

I found a lot of good LPs Friday. It goes through Sunday, so get over there. Besides vinyl there are CDs, books, T-shirts, and posters.

Transmission 3 Year Anniversary | Club Jäger | 3/10

Wednesday was the three year anniversary of Jake Rudh DJing at Clubhouse Jäger under the event name Transmission. I’ve been going there for over two years now, and I can say this was one of the best nights he’s done in that time. Every song bounced off each other, and he played everything I would’ve wanted to request. Yes I said request. Jake is the only DJ around town that doesn’t get offended when you ask him to play something. This is just one of the features that gives you a feel for the kind of experience Jake wants his audience to have. When it comes down to it, he just wants you to enjoy moving your ass around the dance floor to some of the best bands that have ever hit the earth. Here is where I’m going to name-drop some of the bands I remember Jake playing Wednesday night….New Order, O.M.D., The Jam, The Ramones, Buzzcocks, The Cure, David Bowie, Human League, Pet Shop Boys, etc. Now here is where you freak out because these are all your favorite bands….!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Transmission is every Wednesday night at Clubhouse Jäger.

The Sunny Era | Red Stag | 3/10

March 11, 2010 1 comment

The Sunny Era played a two hour set at the Red Stag Supper Club on Wednesday night. They are a dapper group of individuals from the Minneapolis area, but they sound like they’re from the far East. They have a worldly approach to indie rock. They remind me of DeVotchka or a Gypsy version of Mojave 3. The thing that amazes me is that the sound they produce is coming from just three people. Eric Stainbrook sings and plays guitar. Laila Stainbrook sometimes sings and plays accordion, violin, keys, and clarinet. Rob Foehl is their percussionist. This is a very original outfit for this area, and it’s one of the most refreshing bands I’ve heard from the indie scene for a long, long time.

Be sure to see their next performance at the Kitty Cat Klub on March 21st

Visit them on their site or Myspace.

P.S. Somebody please put them on the Gogol Bordello and DeVotchka bill!

Don’t Miss This….

If you live in the MSP area, you’re going to want to check this out. Some of the biggest record collectors/sellers are selling vinyl this coming Friday through Sunday. I’ve bought thousands of records from these guys myself so I know they have good stuff. I even remember discussing the New York Dolls with Johnny, and he has a signed Johnny Thunders LP (of many many others).
