It was a sold out show, but it didn’t really seem like it because it was pretty easy to get close. Final Fantasy aka Canadian Owen Pallett played first, and he was accompanied on a few songs by a percussionist, who he referred to as a “mute”. He played a pretty short set, which consisted of a lot of new material, some of which will most likely show up on his upcoming Heartland release. He uses a looping system, creating a full orchestra sound, and he really has his timing down. Someone from the audience expressed a desire to hear him play a little Destroyer which he has been known to do in the past, but he politely declined. He ended with “The C N Tower Belongs to the Dead”…

The Mountain Goats played for about an hour to an hour and a half and went from four-piece to a few songs by frontman John Darnielle by himself on piano. Owen Pallett came out for a few songs as well, accompanying on violin. People were singing along, and it reminded me of a nerded-out version of Dashboard Confessional – but not really as bad as that sounds. It was a really good set, except for the couple of people freaking out so much. They got pissed at anyone taking a picture because it distracted them from their worship. The second encore was just Darnielle by himself.
