I didn’t know too much about Wye Oak before I saw them, but let me tell you…they were a nice surprise. These are two people making music that sounds like more than two people. Jenn Wasner does the singing while playing guitar. Andy Stack plays drums using one hand and keys using the other for a majority of the time. They don’t just play typical, cute indie music like they might appear. Jenn isn’t afraid to get loud on guitar, throw in some drone, and say a few naughty words here and there. Although there was an endearing moment during their set when Stack ran to get his “rock” as if he couldn’t continue if it weren’t by his side. Nobody really understood what it was for, but that was just another quirk about the band that made me like them more.

Say Hi gave a splendid performance. From what I understand, Eric Elbogen is sort of the Trent Reznor of the band. The rest of the band is just there backing him up. Their sound mixes lyrics and moods that relate to any Midwesterner. You can understand just by the title of the song, “November Was White, December Was Grey.”

David Bazan didn’t seem wasted this time. He’s known for getting drunk, and that’s an understatement. He is also known for having great lyrics, and that might just be an understatement as well. He plays bass, and the rest of the band fills in riffs and rhythm with each of their instruments. On a tangent…I swear his drummer looks like a skinnier Simon Pegg. I know this is unimportant, but I couldn’t help but laugh. Anyways…

Bazan and band sifted through their set throwing in hit songs here and there and adding humor between songs. Bazan would ask, “Are there any questions at this point of the show?” One person even got Bazan to confess to being a “shit-talker” in one of his Q & A sessions. He may talk shit, but when he sings it’s gold.
